Black and Tan

Black and Tan

We hadn’t had a Black and Tan for awhile, but they’re absolutely delicious and super fun to pour. Plus they’re impressive to anyone who hasn’t had one before.

A Black and Tan is a mix of Harp Lager and Guinness. Harp is heavy enough that the stout sits on top of it when poured over a spoon. While some may say that you can use a number of different lagers to make a B&T, it’s not true. It needs to be a heavy lager to layer right, which is why Harp works perfectly.

Part of why we like them so much is that we enjoy a Guinness every now and then, but they’re heavy so mixing in a lighter beer results in a pint that goes down real easy (maybe a little too easy). It’s perfect for a casual get together like a games night or backyard BBQ.

To prepare a Black and Tan, fill a beer glass halfway with Harp,  then top the glass with Guinness. The stout is best poured slowly over an upside-down spoon, placed over the glass to avoid direct contact. The end result is a beautifully layered pint. This video does a great job at breaking it down.
