Best Day of the Week

Cure a Hangover with Ramen

Cure a Hangover with Ramen

Is Sunday still the best day of the week when you’re hungover? You bet your ass it is. I mean, some Sunday’s require a slow start and this was definitely one of those days, but we always find a way to rally.

We were up to some Halloween fun the night before and it resulted in a raging hangover. Was it worth it? Yes. Do we need to drink our weight in Gatorade just to feel like regular human beings? Also yes.

Being hungover sucks. I’m actually going to get real for a moment here: being hungover, especially on a Sunday gives me crazy levels of  anxiety. As someone who works a 9-5 (or let’s be honest, 9-whenever my work gets done which is often past 5), the Sunday blues can hit me hard and it’s much worse when I’m still nursing a hangover.

Which is why I need my friends. I could totally stay in by myself all day, feeling sorry for myself in my sweatpants watching movies on Netflix that I’ll never admit to, or I can snap out of it and make some delicious food for my pals.

For us, a hungover meal doesn’t need to be deep fried (but it can be deep fried – we don’t discriminate). One of our favourite hangover foods is sushi of the all-you-can-eat variety. You may think sushi is a weird choice to cure a hangover, and to that we say don’t knock it ’til you try it. Today, our food of choice was ramen. The noodles paired with the soft boiled egg will rock your world when you have a hangover. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed here.

Plus, it’s easy AF to make yet is super impressive. Your friends will think you’re way less hungover than you actually are.

*The below recipe yields three servings

  1. Start by making the broth. Add the vegetable (or chicken) broth to a medium pot and bring to a boil over medium heat. Once the broth begins to steam add the green onions, miso paste, Sambel Oklek, lime juice, fish sauce, ginger and soy sauce. Once boiled, turn the heat down to low and let simmer.
  2. Cook the chow mein noodles.
  3. Add the bok choy and mushrooms to a frying pan, heating them over medium heat until the boy choy is wilted and the mushrooms are tender and lightly browned. We added additional soy sauce while these were cooking, as we wanted our ramen to be salty and mushrooms do a great job of absorbing liquid!
  4. Prepare the soft boiled eggs. Chatelaine has a really good guide for how long to boil your eggs here.
  5. Divide the cooked noodles between the three bowls, then add enough broth to cover the noodles.
  6. Top the bowls with the carrots, corn, mushrooms, bok choy, chicken, bean sprouts, enoki mushrooms (we ate them raw), cilantro, basil, fried onions, sriracha and sesame seeds.
  7. Eat this up and then maybe have a nap.

Sometimes your past the point of having a hair of the dog. We’ve all been there. Once the smell hits your nose your gag reflex is already kicking in. We have a drink ready for such occasion. Enter our ginger and ginseng iced tea to save the day. You can grab the recipe here.
