We’re in love with fall. The season brings about a whole new colour palette – and we’re here for it. We were in the DIY spirit this #SundayFunday so we decided to usher in the season with some badass floral arrangements.
Floral arranging is an underestimated art. It takes careful thought and planning to make a great bouquet, with just the right mix of colours and textures. But when you get it right, it’s oh so good.
Having flowers in the house can totally brighten your day, and it doesn’t need to be an expensive venture. We got creative with sourcing materials for these bouquets and had a ton of fun during the process.
- Mason Jar
- Plastic netting (you can get this from a bag of fruit, like avocados or oranges)
- Scissors
- Flowers
- Foliage
- Berries (optional)
- Creativity (mandatory)
First, choose a cohesive colour scheme that you want to work with. It’s best to stick to 3-4 main colours max paired with foliage and berries to fill out the arrangement – otherwise there will be just too much going on!
Hit a floral shop to pick out some flowers for your bouquet. You don’t need to get anything super pricey to make a beautiful bouquet, but there’s nothing wrong with splurging on a couple of nice pieces if they’ll take your arrangement to the next level. We got a couple of roses from our local florist, but then shifted our focus to foraging some cool wild flowers and weeds to fill out the rest of the bouquet. We found some beautiful golden rod that was just growing in a parking lot on the way back to my place – it was bright yellow and we used it in all our bouquets.
We also bought dill weed from the grocery section of the supermarket. It helped to fill out the bouquet but also smelled amazing. My whole apartment literally smelled like dill, and I was not complaining.
Once you have all of your materials together, grab your mason jar and fill it 1/3 of the way with water. Then take the plastic netting and cut it in to a circle, just slightly bigger than the circumference of your mason jar lid. Place the netting over the top of the jar and tighten the outside ring of the lid over the netting to fasten it in place. The net is helpful for a couple of reasons: it helps to ensure the flowers stay upright in the jar and also allows you to put together a bouquet that looks really full and evenly spaced while using less flowers. After you use this trick once you’ll never go back.
Depending on your vision for the arrangement you can start by placing the flowers first, followed by the filler or vice versa. It’s totally up to you. It’s all about following your heart and creative eye.
