Today we felt like trying something new. Alyssa just moved into a new apartment and wanted something cool to hang on her bare walls. We felt like getting crafty and yarn wall hangings are all the rage.
And it’s no wonder, they’re gorgeous and super easy to customize when it comes to the colours, size and how you choose to trim the ends. Plus, we were so surprised at how quick it was to make this beauty. It took less than an hour, though we were operating as a factory line, with two people measuring out yarn, and the third person tying the pieces which made us super efficient.
We have no experience whatsoever with weaving or knitting, but you definitely don’t need to. There’s more complicated macrame that definitely involves some knowledge, but we went the super simple route which was just as satisfying and effective.
- Yarn – we recommend going with a couple of different sizes, colours and textures, but most of all follow your heart. We wanted something colourful so we chose a mix of pinks, purples, blue and white.
- Branch or dowel (which you can get at a hardware store like Lowe’s or Home Depot) – this will be the fixture for your yarn. We chose a branch because it’s super cool and rustic, and also free 🙂
- Scissors
Step 1: Set yourself up at a table that gives you lots of space to work at, or hang your branch/dowel first for easy access.
Step 2: Pick which colour yarn you would like to start with and determine how long you want each piece to be – then double that length and make your first cut. If you know you want to braid a couple of pieces and you’re going to be trimming your wall hanging straight across the bottom then cut those a little bit longer as once you braid them it will make those strands shorter than the others.
Step 3: Once you measure out your first piece, you can use it as your measuring stick to cut your remaining pieces of yarn. It’s efficient to measure out a handful of yarn before you start tying, but if you’re working with your #sundayfunday crew then by all means, divide and conquer like we did.
Step 4: Tie your yarn onto the branch or dowel. Fold your first piece of yarn in half, wrap it around the branch and pull the ends through. Pull tight and secure it where you would like it.
Step 5: Repeat this pattern until you have worked all the way down your branch, switching colours as you go. Mix up your colours in a way that suits your fancy.
Step 6: Trim your ends. We cut ours straight across but you can also cut in a triangular shape or get wild and go zigzag.
Volia, you’ve got a beautiful piece of art for your pad! These wall hangings can go for quite a fee on Etsy, so you should feel pretty good. Depending on this size, these guys aren’t that expensive to make but also make for an awesome gift, especially for a baby shower where you can coordinate your colours to match a nursery or gender reveal. Just saying.
