Make DIY Teacup Christmas Ornaments

DIY Christmas Teacup Ornaments

Tree decorating is one of our favourite Christmas activities, hands down. It signifies the start of the season, where you can officially lean into celebrating the holidays. We always decorate our tree with a bumpin’ holiday soundtrack blaring in the background and a delicious drink in hand (and you bet your ass we recommend one below).

Everyone’s perfect tree is different, and there’s no right way. Some like neutral tones, others like bright colours, or a consistent theme. Alyssa and my fam have ornaments that have been passed through generations, so we hang some of the same ones every year. So it’s a totally mixed bag of ornaments, and we like that. Meanwhile, Rachel has so. many. ornaments. She could literally decorate like five trees with the volume she’s packing. They’re all glittery and beautiful and I want them for myself.

One thing the three of us can all agree on is that we love having ornaments that are homemade (and we love making them). There’s some incredible ornaments out there, like this, this and this. And homemade ornaments will never trump these, but they’re special because you put in the work to make them.

Last year we made some DIY ornaments filled with sequins, so the time around we wanted to take a different approach. So, we took  teacups and turned them into mini dioramas. What’s great about repurposing teacups is that they’re super light, so they hang well on a tree. They also allow for a bit of depth, so you can create a mini winter wonderland. This is an especially great activity for making with kids (though watch out for that hot glue gun!).

  • Teacup. Make sure it’s lightweight and not classified as a mug. We thrifted ours, which make them much cheaper.
  • Glue gun and plenty of glue gun sticks
  • Red and green felt
  • Cotton balls
  • Pom poms
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Star sparkles
  • Ribbon
  • Googly eyes
  • Trees (for modeling), you can get these at craft stores or even Dollarama. Here’s some fun ones on Amazon too!
1. Start by making the elves. To create the body, cut a long strip of felt, about an inch in height and five inches in length. Roll the felt and glue the end. Glue a small pom pom to the top as the head, adding googly eyes, a tiny red pom pom as the nose and a portion of a cotton ball as the beard. Create a cone using the felt and glue it to the top of the head as the hat.
2. Take the teacup glue cotton to the side opposite the handle (don’t mess this up, I did the first time and had to start over – luckily, the hot glue peels right off the teacup) and glue a layer of cotton.
3. Add any background details, we did star sequins.
4. Glue an elf or two (depending on the size of your teacup) along with a mini tree to the glue.
5. Add any finishing touches, such as a pipe cleaner around the edge.
6. Finish with a ribbon tied around the teacup handle, for hanging.
