I don’t know about you guys, but there’s something about Spring that gives us a burst of energy. In Toronto, the Spring weather isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, there are still days where it hails sideways and even snow makes its way back every now and then. So we’re definitely not going out and basking in the sun anytime soon, but we are for sure over the thick knit socks in front of the TV. That makes Spring a perfect time to start a project (or five) and brighten the inside of your home before you get out there.
So, we put together our five favourite Spring DIYs to help you brighten up the gloomy days that unfortunately come with spring… and lets just say, after making one of these (let alone all five) you’ll be that person that for sure has the sun shining from your home!
Make a Floral Arrangement
This is a true case of Fake It Till you Make It! I mean, we wish flowers were growing wild and free right now, and maybe a few kinds are but not enough to make an entire arrangement. So here’s the fix: go for a stroll, forage a few things, twigs, pussy willow, even a few green sprigs and then mix them in with some store bought seasonal flowers. It’s half the cost and you get to really customize the overall look. We made three different styles of bouquets from the same selection of flowers and its shocking how unique they came out. Also we used an avocado bag to make the arrangement fool proof! Get the lowdown on how to make your own here.
Perfect for: When it’s too crummy to go out so you want to bring some sunshine inside, you’re low on funds but want to send your love to a pal, feeling creative but don’t have time for a high commitment project.
Make a Water Garden
We’ve been calling this the easiest DIY we’ve ever done! If you’re looking for something simple, elegant, and trendy to DIY this is definitely for you! The coolest thing about this project is discovering how mind-blowing Mother Nature is… I mean, the idea of a plant clipping placed in water not only surviving but THRIVING is unreal!
Perfect for: When you want more plants but you’re on a tight budget, if you’re terrible at keeping plants alive, or if you want to add a trendy piece to your space!
Plant Cacti Arrangements
Cacti and succulents are oh so trendy for a very simple reason….they are so low maintenance and absolutely adorable. We ventured off to an amazing plant store to choose from an array of succulents and cacti to put in our very own arrangements. A serious fun way to jazz up a sunny spot in your home! You’re going to want gardening gloves for this one because cacti can be real pricks (pun intended), and we mean it, those little needles are ALWAYS going to hurt – don’t let the cuteness of a cacti fool you. If you’re prone to getting pricked, we recommend the succulent approach, those little squishy guys are as soft as they look. Find out all the details for this fun planting day here.
Perfect for: when you feel like adding sophistication to a space on a medium – low budget, gifting something handmade, selling something you made on Etsy so fast it makes you rethink your day job!
Plant Your Own Vegetable Garden from Seeds
Simply put, it’s the DIY that will have your grocery bill the smallest it’s ever been and you tummy the fullest! A veggie garden from scratch has so many pros, including a fat wallet, a happy environment and your health – plus, don’t things just taste better when they’re homegrown? So keep your egg cartons, (and your shells if you want extra nutrients in the soil), and get set for your very own veggie (or herb) garden from scratch! Also, after your done all of this planting, you’re probably in the mood for a cocktail (I mean, that’s how we roll), so you better believe we have something delicious to pair with garden gloves and freshly watered soil. All you need to know about this DIY and delicious cocktail can be found here! Happy planting!
Perfect for: Fulfilling your maternal needs, proving to yourself you’ve got a green thumb, giving a second life to your egg cartons!
Make your own Yarn Wall Hanging
Some yarn art out there is stunning and incredibly intricate. We’ve looked at some and thought that it must’ve taken hours, no, DAYS for someone to have made that. After some research we learned that we weren’t wrong at all! Some of these gorgeous pieces take days to complete!! We’re just getting our toes wet in the world of macrame and other yarn art and we found a really simple approach that you can have done in less than an hour (especially if you have a creative playlist going)! Check out our Yarn Wall Hanging (and that swell playlist) here to get your craft on and have a pretty impressive piece to hang up in no time!
Perfect for: using up any extra yarn you have lying around, jazzing up a wall in your place, a selfie wall/ backdrop for a party.
