The Last Word

The Last Word Cocktail

This classic cocktail recipe is called The Last Word. This cocktail only has four ingredients, but they create a really balanced flavour – a little bit sweet, a little bit sour. It’s a total sipper, and one of our favourite cocktails of all time. It was also the perfect cocktail pairing for our DIY framed quotes.

If you’re not familiar with The Last Word then we’ll bring you up to speed. It’s a cocktail with an interesting backstory. The creation of this beauty cocktail dates back to the Prohibition era and it pretty much fell off the radar shortly after that until 2004. Its revival is credited to a Seattle bartender named Murray Stenson, who found the recipe in a 1951 cocktail manual called Bottoms Up! – one of the only places the recipe was even printed – and began serving the drink at the Zig Zag Cafe (sidenote: we would like to get our hands on Bottom’s Up!, it sounds great). Since then, it’s considered a revived classic and has been popping up on more and more bar menus, including ones in Toronto.

The Last Word is made with gin, lime juice, Luxardo maraschino liqueur and Chartreuse. It’s got a beautiful light green hue that makes it a gorgeous bevy to serve up for friends. It’s totally photogenic.

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Fill it with ice, and shake vigorously for about 10 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Cheers and sip.
