This super refreshing cocktail is our new spring drink obsession. We literally used the herbs we bought for planting today in the drink itself. The bright flavours of mint, basil and lemon verbena make this a great cocktail for sitting on a patio and soaking in the sun.
The Smash is a family of cocktails is similar to a mojito or mint julep and generally includes a base spirit, sweetener, fresh herbs and ice, but can also include seasonal fruit – which you could definitely add. Blackberries would pair well as they have notes of mint.
- 2 oz Gin
- 1 oz honey syrup (instructions below)
- 2 mint leaves
- 2 lemon verbena leaves (these can be harder to come by but definitely make the drink!)
- 2 basil leaves
- 1 lime wheel cut in quarters
- Crushed ice
Start by making your honey syrup. Mix equal parts honey and water in a small pot. Heat over the stove until the honey dissolves in the water, let cool.
In a cocktail shaker add all the herbs, lime wedges and honey syrup. Muddle contents in the shaker. Add 2oz gin, cover and dry shake for 30 seconds. Pour all contents into a rocks glass and top with crushed ice. Garnish with a basil leaf.
Cheers!
