Hopping right into it… this DIY was so easy we wish we had done it sooner. Tassel earrings have been hot for a couple of years now, and it doesn’t look like they are on the out anytime soon. They are perfect for any time of year, they have the warmth and coziness of the Fall/Winter months and the light-weight, beachy vibes of Spring-Summer. Did we mention that they are budget-friendly?
On average a pair of these sell for $17.00 apiece on Etsy, but this way you get to customize everything, length, fluffiness, hardware (gold, silver, or brass) AND make enough for all your earring lovers! This DIY was under $15.00 and we still have enough supplies to make more (check the pic below, look at all the earring things!!)
We made these for our Galentine’s Day Care packages, but it’s a really fun craft to do for any occasion (or just because you want some tassel earrings!). All the supplies can be easily found at a craft store (and some just around the house), so keep that $17.00 in your wallet, or put to towards a bottle of rose like we did, and get crafting.
- Embroidery Floss (choose whatever colour — the selection is endless!)
- Jewelry pliers* /long nose pliers (we used some from a household toolbox)
- Earring fish hooks
- Jump rings (we used 7mm, you could use 6mm)
- Scissorrs
- Small piece of cardstock (can be a scrap piece)
- Cut out a rectangular piece of cardboard to the desired length of the earrings.
- Wrap the embroidery floss 15 times around the cardboard. The more you wrap the fuller the tassel.
- Using pliers, open 3 jump rings to make a slight “s”/”c”.
- Carefully slide the wrapped floss off the cardboard. With one hand, pinch the top section of the floss, create a loop opening (should form naturally), and guide the jump ring through it. Use pliers to close shut. The floss and loop should now be linked together.
- Now, to create the bulb on the top of the earring, place the floss in the opening of another jump ring, and close shut. Repeat again. (You can add as many as you’d like– any rings after the first are now ornamental)
- Attach the earring fish hooks to the top loops by gently manipulating the opening with pliers and then closing them shut.
- Cut the bottom of your fringe and fluff that shit out
- Keep going until the end of a sitcom marathon and you have DIY gifts for all!
We were in serious DIY mode while making these. We had Rosé gummies setting in the fridge and our new fave, go-to cocktail French 77 on the table! What do you think they mean when they say to keep the creative juice flowing?
