The Spring Smash
This super refreshing cocktail is our new spring drink obsession. We literally used the herbs we bought for planting today in the drink itself. The bright flavours of mint, basil and lemon verbena make this a great cocktail for sitting on a patio and soaking in the sun.
The Smash is a family of cocktails is similar to a mojito or mint julep and generally includes a base spirit, sweetener, herb, ice and soda, but can also include seasonal fruit – which you could definitely add. Blackberries would pair well as they have notes of mint.
- 1 oz Gin
- 1 oz honey syrup (instructions below)
- 3 mint leaves
- 3 lemon verbena leaves (these can be harder to come by but definitely make the drink!)
- 3 basil leaves
- Soda water
Start by making your honey syrup. Mix equal parts honey and water in a small pot. Heat over the stove until the honey dissolves in the water, let cool. Grab the glassware of your choosing (a rock glass or highball both work) and to the bottom of the glass add your herbs, honey syrup and gin. Muddle the herbs in the glass with your spirit before adding ice. Top with soda, giving a little stir to distribute the herbs throughout.
